Mattel, Inc. has unveiled the first Barbie doll with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), expanding representation in its iconic Fashionistas line. Created in partnership with Breakthrough T1D, the doll features authentic medical accessories: a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) with pink heart-shaped tape on her arm, an insulin pump on her waist, and a blue polka-dot outfit symbolizing diabetes awareness. She also carries a pastel blue purse for diabetes supplies.
Krista Berger, SVP of Barbie, stated the doll helps children see themselves reflected in play while building empathy. Breakthrough T1D CEO Aaron Kowalski, who has T1D, emphasized the importance of visibility for affected families.
Barbie donated dolls to Breakthrough T1D’s 2025 Children’s Congress in Washington D.C. and honored advocates Robin Arzón (Peloton) and Lila Moss (model) with custom dolls. Arzón called the initiative “empowering,” while Moss praised its message that “being different is cool.”
The doll joins Barbie’s diverse Fashionistas collection, which includes dolls with Down syndrome, hearing aids, and blindness. The 2025 line uses 50%+ sustainable bio-circular plastic and FSC-certified packaging. Available now at Mattel Shop and nationwide retailers.
